What Is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy uses hands-on techniques to work with the muscles and other soft tissues.

The pressure and techniques used can vary considerably. Some appointments may involve targeted work on a particular area, while others may take a broader approach to muscular tension and relaxation.

Your appointment will be adapted according to:

  • Your reason for booking
  • Areas of tension or discomfort
  • Relevant health conditions
  • Previous injuries
  • Current activity levels
  • Treatment preferences
  • Sensitivity and comfort
  • Personal goals

We will explain the proposed approach and check that you are comfortable throughout.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is designed to work with muscular tension, stiffness and physical demands associated with sport, exercise and active lifestyles.

It is suitable for far more than professional athletes.

People who book sports massage may include:

  • Runners
  • Cyclists
  • Swimmers
  • Gym members
  • Golfers
  • Rugby or football players
  • Triathletes
  • Walkers
  • People completing physical work
  • Anyone returning to activity after a period of reduced movement

When Might Sports Massage Be Useful?

People commonly book sports massage for:

  • Muscular tightness following training
  • Stiffness between exercise sessions
  • Activity-related aches
  • Preparation before an event
  • Recovery following sport
  • Restricted or uncomfortable movement
  • Repetitive muscular demands
  • General maintenance alongside an active lifestyle

Where symptoms suggest a more significant injury, medical condition or neurological problem, we may recommend that you seek further assessment.

Massage for Stress-Related Tension

Stress can affect the body in several ways.

Some people notice that they:

  • Hold tension around the neck and shoulders
  • Clench the jaw
  • Feel stiff through the upper back
  • Experience muscular fatigue
  • Find it difficult to relax
  • Develop tension-related discomfort

Massage provides time away from everyday demands and may help muscles feel more relaxed and comfortable.

Many people adopt regular massage as a part of their wider approach to relaxation and wellbeing.

What Happens at Your First Massage Appointment?

Initial Conversation

Your appointment begins with a short consultation.

We may ask about:

  • Why you have booked
  • The location and nature of any discomfort
  • Your work and everyday activities
  • Exercise or sporting demands
  • Previous injuries
  • Relevant medical conditions
  • Medication
  • Your preferences and goals

This helps her identify whether massage appears suitable and how the appointment should be adapted.

Movement or Physical Check

Where relevant, we may ask you to perform simple movements or assess areas of muscular tension.

This is not the same as a full chiropractic or medical examination.

Your Massage Treatment

We will explain:

  • Which area will be treated
  • The type of pressure proposed
  • Any techniques we plan to use

Only the area being treated should be exposed, with towels used to protect your comfort and privacy.

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage is a targeted form of massage used to address specific areas of muscular tension, tenderness, or restricted soft-tissue movement.

It may be suitable for people experiencing tension associated with:

  • Desk-based work
  • Prolonged driving
  • Repetitive activity
  • Physical jobs
  • Stress
  • Changes in exercise
  • General stiffness
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Back and hip muscular tension

You do not need to be involved in sport to book a massage.

The treatment will be adapted to the level of pressure and approach you are comfortable with.

Massage FAQs

Does Sports Massage Need to Be Painful?

No. Sports massage is sometimes assumed to require extremely deep or painful pressure, but stronger pressure is not automatically more effective.

The level of pressure should be selected according to:

  • The area being treated
  • Your comfort
  • Tissue sensitivity
  • The purpose of the appointment
  • Your health and injury history

Some techniques may feel intense or tender, but you should be able to communicate with Alice and request a change in pressure at any time.

How Might I Feel After Massage?

Responses vary.

Some people feel relaxed or notice that movement feels easier. Others experience temporary tenderness, tiredness or mild muscular soreness.

Alice will explain any likely short-term response and advise you what to do if you are concerned after the appointment.

Severe or worsening symptoms should not be assumed to be a normal response to massage.

What is the difference between sports and therapeutic massage?

Sports massage is often focused on the demands of exercise and physical activity. Therapeutic massage tends to focus on a particular area of tension or discomfort. The techniques can overlap, and we will tailor the appointment to your needs.

Do I need to play sport to book sports massage?

No. Sports massage may be suitable for anyone experiencing muscular tension or stiffness, including people with physical jobs or repetitive daily activities.

Can I book massage without seeing a chiropractor?

Yes. Massage is available as a separate service and does not normally require a chiropractic consultation.

Will acupuncture be included in my massage?

Not automatically. Alice may discuss acupuncture where she considers it appropriate, but it will only be included with your agreement.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that can be adjusted easily. Alice will explain what needs to be removed or moved and will protect your privacy throughout.

How much clothing will I need to remove?

This depends on the area being treated. Only the relevant area should be exposed, with towels used to maintain your comfort and privacy.

How often should I have a massage?

This depends on your reason for booking, activity levels, response and personal preferences. We can discuss an appropriate interval without requiring you to commit to ongoing appointments.

Can massage help headaches?

Massage may be considered where headaches are associated with muscular tension, particularly around the neck and shoulders. Headaches can have many causes, and new, severe, unusual or worsening headaches require appropriate medical assessment.

Where do massage appointments take place?

Massage appointments take place at MOJO Chiropractic, 398–400 Lymington Road, Highcliffe, Christchurch, BH23 5HE.
